There’s no doubt about it— travel can be stressful regardless of what your circumstances are. Whether you’re over the age of 70 traveling alone, or 25 years old traveling with your children, there are a lot of details that go into preparing a trip.

In many cases, a lot of people get so overwhelmed by the details that they forget the entire purpose of traveling which is to enjoy yourself.  To help you avoid unnecessary travel stress, here are some of the most practical tips for a stress-free vacation.

Create a List

There are all sorts of things that you can forget when traveling. While in some cases forgetting to pack something may be as simple as finding a replacement on your trip, there are other things that are not so easily replaced.  The first step to ensuring that something important doesn’t get left behind at home is making a list

Start making the list as many as three weeks before your trip. As things pop up in your mind write them down. Whether it’s organizing someone to come feed the cat, or something you don’t want to forget to pack—start a list.  As your trip approaches, check each thing off as you go. On your final packing day, make sure that you check each item off ensuring that you don’t forget a thing.

Double Check Your Documents

It’s all too common of a scenario— you’re all ready to board the plane and you realize that your passport has expired three days prior to the trip. It’s an honest but totally possible mistake. Before traveling, always make sure that you check the dates on all of your documents, from your passport to your airplane ticket.

Make sure that you double-check how your name is spelled, verify that the dates are totally correct and that your destination is in fact where you want to go. If you’re traveling to a country you’ve never been to before, you should always double-check whether you need special visa requirements or even vaccinations. Do your research as early on as possible to avoid last-minute chaos.

Call Your Bank

If you’re traveling outside of the country, you want to make sure that your bank is alerted. If your activity is showing strange transactions outside of your normal location, then your bank may put a freeze on your card thinking it’s fraud. A travel alert is essential to ensure you don’t find yourself without money on the other side of the planet.

Get Plenty of Rest

A lot of people get travel anxiety the day before traveling. They may stay up late, or wake up at the crack of the dawn anxious to start their trip. However, traveling while exhausted can lead to all sorts of disasters. Try to get as much sleep before your big travel day as possible, and you won’t just be less susceptible to stress, your trip will go much more smoothly overall.
